How Does Germicidal UV Light Work?

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) results in painful sunburn. But were you aware that another kind of ultraviolet light can be useful for keeping your residence’s air clean?

The sun gives off two types of dangerous UV rays, UVA and UVB. These harmful rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other signs of premature aging.

There’s another kind of UV light, known as UVC. While direct exposure to this ultraviolet light isn’t good for your skin or eyes, it can safely be applied to clean air, water and various surfaces.

Ilten's Incorporated uses this light in several of our products to improve air filtration in Cedar Rapids homes.

Applications for Ultraviolet Light

This distinct wavelength is called “germicidal” since it wipes out the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens move through this light, they eventually die as they can’t multiply.

This makes UVC light a powerful alternative to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is used in a lot of disinfection applications, including medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also applied to sterilize drinking water and other liquids created in food processing.

It’s becoming a popular choice to purify air in houses in Cedar Rapids. That’s because it can also eradicate common indoor contaminants like mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an added perk if someone in your household has seasonal allergies or asthma.

Using Germicidal UV Light in Your Residence

We put a germicidal UV light in your HVAC system’s ductwork. As the light is placed within the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling equipment. This also keeps its rays carefully contained while providing strong cleaning for your house’s air.

Filthy air is purified in a two-step process, first traveling through your air filter and then the UV light before circulating around your house. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t on, these lights still function to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort equipment clean.

This whole-house product is better than a portable air purifier, which is limited to cleaning the air in one space. Portable air purifiers also can’t freshen your ductwork or the innerworkings of your HVAC unit. A clean HVAC system is often a more efficient one that could even run for a longer life span. And, many portable air purifiers have a bad reputation for creating ozone.

When thinking over buying a germicidal lamp for your residence, it’s important to get one that doesn’t produce ozone. While ozone is fantastic at wiping out odors and chemicals, it might also irritate your lungs and lead to other respiratory troubles.
