Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Cedar Rapids just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always prepared to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a repairman out out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall could bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have built up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Cedar Rapids will probably swing up and down over the last few days of winter, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Ilten's Incorporated in Cedar Rapids, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
